Bay Area Tire Recycling

Bay Area Tire Recycling, the only crumb rubber facility in Northern California, has joined the RPA as a producer member.

The company, started in 1998, is a demonstration facility for the Link System from Australia, an ambient system making 3/8" steel-free shreds and crumb to 30 minus. Its equipment division, B&W Environmental Solutions, plans to open other crumb rubber plants throughout the Western Hemisphere.

CRM

CRM (Crumb Rubber Manufacturers), a Southern California crumb rubber firm, has joined the RPA as a producer member.

The company supplies crumb rubber for the asphalt industry as well as molded goods and other products.

First Nation Recovery

First Nation Recovery, a tire recycling facility recently opened on Cabazon Indian land in California, has joined the RPA as a producer member.

It is the first tire recycling center on an American Indian community, located in an eco-industrial park dedicated to preserving nature and putting materials back in a usable state. It produces crumb rubber in a range of sizes to 40 mesh. EcoPave TP is it's enhanced formula of fine mesh crumb rubber for the Asphalt-Rubber industry.

Petrochem Marketing

Petrochem Marketing, a 12-year-old manufacturer of pavement maintenance products, has joined the RPA as an associate member.

Flex Seal, its main product, is a slurry seal emulsion containing recycled tire rubber. It uses a cold process to mix rubber from scrap tires with asphalt, polymers, and other additives.

Western States Surfacing

Western States Surfacing, a provider of pavement maintenance services since 1960, has joined the RPA as a user member.

WSS offers a variety of road construction and pavement maintenance options, including a rubberized chip seal made with about 16% crumb rubber and 5% high natural rubber.

East Arkansas Planning District

The East Arkansas Planning & Development District, a nonprofit consulting agency serving local government agencies in an 8,000 square mile area along the Mississippi River, has joined the RPA as an associate member.

The district manages a six-county solid waste district and operates an 11 -county waste tire district handling an average of 160,000 tires annually.

CR3 of Indiana

CR3 of Indiana, a scrap tire processing facility in Muncie, Indiana, has joined the RPA as a producer member.

The company, in operation since 1995, markets primarily to commercial entities. It can process tires to particles ranging from a 2-inch chip to a 40 mesh.

Hotmix Industries

Hotmix Industries, Inc., a manufacturer of portable asphalt plants for the Latin American market, has joined the RPA as an associate member.

Members on the move

Ross Kashiwagi has relocated to the Sacramento office of Granite Construction as branch division plant engineer. He has served as the contractor's Asphalt-Rubber engineer for the Southern California region and most recently was plant manager at Granite's Littlerock operation near Palmdale. Pehr Malmstrom, DackRec AB, reports the establishment of a crumb rubber facility in Malmo, Sweden. He says the plant is currently supplying product for playgrounds in Malmo and in France and he is eager to promote the use of Asphalt-Rubber in Sweden.

Mike Masson, PolyTek Rubber and Recycling CEO, reports the acquisition of the Southwest Rubber plant near Tulsa, Oklahoma, which has been renamed PolyTek Oklahoma. He also announced the addition of Clay Richards and Larry Gilliland to the PRR sales force. Richards was formerly with American Surface Technologies in Canada and the U.S. Gilliland, formerly with EnTire in Nebraska, served on the RPA board in 1998. Welcome back Larry.

FNF Construction and Kevin Turner, project manager of Caltrans' I-8, have received the "Gold Excellence in Rehabilitation Project of the Year Award" by the state of California. FNF was recognized for its ability of partner and its cooperation in the first quality control quality assurance (QCQA) project for San Diego's Dist. 11.

Dick Miller has returned to All States Asphalt as executive vice president. All States Asphalt, an RPA member company since 1995, is based in Massachusetts and serves as an Asphalt-Rubber supplier for the New England states.

Foreign members get voting option

Asphalt-Rubber contractors and crumb rubber producers domiciled outside the U.S. will have the option of voting membership under a resolution passed by the RPA Board of Directors at its meeting in September.

According to Ross Kashiwagi, RPA secretary, the foreign members will be given the option to remain as "associates", or become "regular' members.

The resolution was a result of the expressed desire of several non U.S. companies to have a more active role in the development of the industry.

"Should the companies opt for full membership, their assessments will be placed in a special "self-directed" account to assist in the Asphalt-Rubber education and market expansion in their countries or region," said Kashiwagi.

RPA Staff News

Isaac Shapiro has joined the RPA office on a part-time basis and is responsible for data base management. An Arizona State University student, Shapiro is currently a junior majoring in marketing and international business with a minor in Spanish. He will study in Madrid, Spain this fall.

Michelle Maney, RPA executive assistant, gave birth to Hannah Michelle on September 5. She checked in at six pounds, 11 ounces and was 19 1/2 inches long.
