The Recycled Tire Engineering
and Research Foundation (RTERF) elected George B. Way, recently
retired Pavement Design Engineer for the Arizona Department of
Transportation, to head its Board of Directors. The Board also
elected Anne Stonex, P.E,, Mactec Engineering of Phoenix, as
the Vice Chairman. Barry Takallou, Ph.D, President of CRM of
America was elected Secretary and Mark Belshe, P.E., of FNF Construction
was elected Treasurer. Board members also include Kamil Kaloush,
Ph.D. Professor of Civil Engineering, Arizona State University;
Kathryn Evans, Ph.D, Odessa District, Texas Department of Transportation
and retired ADOT Director of Research, Gene Morris, P.E.
Douglas Carlson, RPA Executive Director is an exofficio
Board member.
The Foundation which is dedicated
to research and technology transfer of beneficial uses of waste
tires in pavements, construction and products held its organizational
meeting March 25, 2004 at its temporary headquarters: 1801 S.

Way retires from Arizona's
Department of Transportation
George
Way, P.E, Pavement Design Engineer retired after 35 years with
the Arizona Department of Transportation. Joining ADOT following
his following his graduation from Arizona State University, one
of George's supervisors was Gene Morris, an early advocate of
Asphalt-Rubber paving materials. George became the Department's
expert in the material and is now known worldwide for his knowledge
in the use of the product. During his career with ADOT, George
was responsible for virtually all concrete and flexible pavement
programs, representing well over 100 projects and 300 million
dollars of construction per year.
In recent years, he has assisted
many states and countries in developing Asphalt-Rubber specifications
and paving programs. He has authored numerous technical papers,
many being translated into other languages. He also serves on
many national committees and expert task groups such as the AASHTO |
Committee on long term pavement performance,
a part of the National Strategic Highway Research Program and
the Transportation Research Board (TRB) on Pavement Management
Systems. He has also led the efforts for ASTM standards and specifications
for Asphalt-Rubber mixes. He is a member of the National Society
of Civil Engineers, American Institute of Chemical Engineers,
Association of Asphalt Pavement Technologists, and the National
and Arizona Society of Professional Engineers.
He has served as a Technical Advisory
Board (TAB) member for the Asphalt-Rubber industry since 1997
and is currently Chairman. He has a keen interest in research
and has worked with Arizona State University on many projects
for ADOT. He also has been actively involved in ongoing research
utilizing crumb rubber in a variety of concrete applications,
including two highway paving projects, a tennis court and a building
at Northern Arizona University.
Way said he is looking forward
to continuing research as Chairman of the Recycled Tire Engineering
and Research Foundation and will play an active role in its functions
