The County of Los Angeles Rubberized Asphalt Concrete Technology Center received the Outstanding Market Development Award for 2003. Directed by K. Bryan Rickey, P.E. and Erik Updyke, P.E. both of the County's Dept. of Public Works, the Technology Center provides educational workshops and technical assistance to cities and counties throughout southern California. Cliff Ashcroft, RPA 1st Vice President presents the award to
Erik Updyke (R) of the LA County RAC Technology Center.

 

The Odessa District of TXDOT received the President's Award for the largest routine use of Asphalt-Rubber in Texas and for its environmental awareness in using over one million tires in the District's roadways. Dr. Kathryn Evans (R), Director of the Odessa District Laboratory received the award from RPA President, Sidney Cox.

 

The 2003 "Excellence in Public Service" award was presented to Ali Zareh (R), Sr. Pavement Design Engineer, Arizona Dept. of Transportation. Every two years Zareh prepares a detailed book on all ADOT Asphalt-Rubber projects since 1988. The book contains the project number, date of placement, type of mix, milepost locations, binder costs, total bid prices and number of tires used. In presenting the award, RPA Director of Communications, Donna Carlson, praised Zareh saying. "The records Ali keeps of AR history in Arizona is an Associations dream come true." When you need specifics on projects, Ali respects your right to know and gets the information to you in a timely manner. He is a great representative for the Department."

 

 

The Excellence in Engineering Award for 2003 was presented to Jose Ramon Graciani Lucini, Jefe del Departmento de Ingeneria and Enrique Lopez Gamiz, Jefe De las Oficina Tecnica, both of the Autopista, Aumar, Valencia, Espana. Dr. Jorge Sousa, 2nd Vice
President made the awards to the two Engineers who were responsible for designing and placing three Asphalt-Rubber pilot projects in Spain. They were unable to attend.

 

  Douglas Forstie (R), former Materials Engineer for the Arizona Dept. of Transportation was chosen to receive the 2003 Partnering Leadership Award. Forstie, now the Acting Deputy State Engineer, Operations created an agency/industry group in 1999 known as the "Asphalt Rubber Team" which met to resolve issues of mutual concern. He also instigated a program of ADOT/RPA statewide workshops every two years to keep all the district personnel updated on the advances in Asphalt-Rubber production and construction procedures. RPA Past President, Mark Belshe of FNF Inc. in AZ presented the award to Forstie.
