Ashcroft Elected to Head RPA
Cliff Ashcroft, V.P., California Operations for FNF Construction, Inc., was elected to head the Rubber Pavements Association for 2005.
Ashcroft joined FNF Construction in 2000 after 10 years marketing Asphalt- Rubber pavements in California. He became a member of the RPA Board of Directors in 1998 and served as the Chairman of the association's California Task Force for several years.
Ashcroft has a solid reputation as an industry expert in the use of Asphalt- Rubber paving materials and is well known to public works agencies throughout the state. He is an active member of several Caltrans/RPA committees and participated in the 1999 review team of Caltrans Asphalt-Rubber projects throughout the state. Ashcroft has been a speaker at dozens of workshops in California as well as Texas, Arkansas, and Illinois. He also presented a paper at Asphalt-Rubber 2003 in Brazil. Because of his enthusiastic and fervent speaking style, Cliff is often called "Brother Ashcroft" by his industry colleagues. He is a member of the California Asphalt Paving Association and serves on the Green Book Specifications Committee in Southern California.
Ashcroft's goal for his term in office is the development of promotional information on the key questions often raised by agencies that are unfamiliar with Asphalt-Rubber Technology. To accomplish this he has appointed RPA past president, Jeffrey Smith, to serve as Chairman of Promotion Committee which includes RPA 1st & 2nd Vice Presidents, Mike Hoag of Granite Construction and Grant McIntosh, President of Western Tire Recycling of British Columbia. Included in this edition are three "issue briefs" addressing key elements of Asphalt-Rubber benefits, Noise, Safety, Long Term Performance and Air Quality. A glossary of Terms is also presented to help our readers with research papers on Asphalt-Rubber (see page 10). Future "issue briefs" will address What is Asphalt-Rubber? Asphalt-Rubber User Cost Benefits and Tire Recycling.
Ashcroft has also tapped the new RPA Secretary, H. Barry Takallou, PhD., to chair a Public Affairs Committee which includes Past President Sidney Cox and Donna J. Carlson, Director of Communications.
Ali Zareh, P.E., Sr. Pavement Design Engineer with the Arizona Department of Transportation, was elected to the Rubber Pavements Association's Technical Advisory Board as the 24th member of the group which contains Asphalt-Rubber experts throughout the United States.      Zareh received his B.S.C.E from Montana State University and is currently pursuing his MS at Arizona State University. During his 20 years with ADOT, Zareh has gained valuable experience in designing and reviewing Asphalt-Rubber Pavements. He is expert in the use of AASHTO Design, including the 2002 AASHTO Mechanistic Design. He has been involved in the Arizona Quiet Pavements Programs which has gained much popularity with Arizona drivers.      Zareh received the 2003 "Excellence in Public Service" award from the RPA for his excellent database and records on ADOT's Asphalt-Rubber project. This information has been extremely valuable to researchers, the industry and other agencies throughout the world. Each year he prepares a booklet which tracks ADOT Asphalt-Rubber projects since 1988 and records the number of waste tires used by the agency.
A U.S. citizen since 1993, Ali recently returned to his native country, Iran, to conduct a workshop on Asphalt-Rubber at the University of Tehran. The interest was so high, Ali was asked to repeat his presentation again on the following day, so all the 600 attendees on the two day conference would have an opportunity to hear. Zareh joined a list of speakers from England, Denmark, Holland, Australia, South Africa and India. Cliff Ashcroft, RPA President said the industry was fortunate to have a continuing ADOT presence on the Technical Advisory Board.
