Arizona State Univ
wants national research center

Will conduct A-R research

Arizona State University is actively seeking funding to create a National Center for High Performance Pavement Materials.

The mission of the proposed center will be to conceive and develop advanced generation, high performance pavement materials while creating the needed technology and human capital base through an integrated agenda in research, education and training, knowledge management and technology transfer.

According to Dr. Matthew Witczak, professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, research will focus on key enabling areas, including: novel paving materials concepts, enhanced design and process concepts, advanced material characterization, performance and distress analysis and prediction models, impact of environmental conditions on performance and life and environmental impact.

Material to be investigated include superpave mixtures, Asphalt-Rubber , other recycled materials including value-added waste materials, new modified materials, geo synthetics and high performance concrete.

RPA offers support

Dr. Jon Epps, professor emeritus, University of Nevada, Reno, chairman of the RPA Technical Advisory Board for 2000; current chairman Mark Belshe, P.E., FNF Construction; TAB members Dr. Gary Hicks, professor emeritus, Oregon State University; and George Way, pavement design engineer, Arizona Department of Transportation, have met with ASU.

They presented the Association's long term research program entitled, Asphalt-Rubber, an industry commitment to excellence. Many of the key major research projects will be included in the center's work.

RPA Executive Director Donna Carlson and members of the Technical Advisory Board have pledged support in securing funding for the center.
