FHWA updating A-R document

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has agreed to update a Summary of Practices document for Asphalt-Rubber in the major user states of Arizona, California, Texas, and Florida.

The work is being conducted by Larry Smith, head of QIS in Gainsville, FL since retiring as materials engineer for the Florida DOT. It is under the supervision of Katherine Petros, pavement and materials engineer for the Western Resources Center of FHWA.

The project will update the 1996 Oregon State University report by R. G. Hicks, J. R. Leahy, D. Hanson, and J. Epps that was part of a five year pooled study by 33 states and the FHWA.

Smith and Petros are meeting with contractors and agencies in the four states to review specifications, field blending practices, and projects. Their report is intended to provide other states with the current practices, materials, construction, and performance of the four states that see a benefit in using CRM and HMA.
