Description From 1970 until present Phoenix has used asphalt-rubber chip seals in a broad spectrum of applications, including: airport runways, heavily traveled streets, for chip sealing to extend street life and for lining lakes. Improvements in the asphalt-rubber material, in the installation machinery and methods, and in the specifications for its use have resulted in improved cost effectiveness. These improvements are described along with quantitative gains in cost effectiveness and new advantages of the asphalt-rubber seal observed through aging and wear. The bottom line is that the asphalt-rubber seal can indeed extend the life of badly deteriorating paving surfaces, thus permitting postponement of paving replacement. In addition, though it still costs 1.5 times the cost of conventional seals, it lasts up to twice as long and requires little or no maintenance.
