| Description |
Eleven
Ontario Demonstration projects (wet and dry processes) were evaluated
in terms of pavement performance, environmental impacts, life
cycle costs and recyclability. Conclusions are included on performance
where the dry process should produce performance equivalent to
conventional hot mix and the wet process appears to enhance performance.
Air emission testing showed rubber mixes produce higher MIBK
(skin and mucus irritant that is moderately toxic but is not
considered to be a carcinogen) but other emissions appeared to
be the same as for conventional hot mix. Recyclability appears
to be feasible but repeated recycling that reduces rubber effectiveness
could cause disposal problems. Life cycle costs of rubber mixes
appear to be higher than conventional mixes but sufficient time
has not elapsed to monitor long term performance which could
impact life cycle costs. |
