| Description | In September 1994, the Corporation of the Town of Kirkland Lake in conjunction with the Ontario Ministry of Environment and Energy constructed a demonstration project with rubber modified hot-mix asphalt concrete as part of the Waste Reduction Office Scrap Tire Project. The primary objectives of the trial are to assess the performance of the MRUAC mix and to evaluate the use of the modified process. The demonstration project was constructed without any significant problems and is considered to be successful in all aspects of the work. While emissions test was not involved, there were no perceived environmental problems with MRUAC process. The cost of the MRUAC mix for the trial is in the order of 20 percent higher than conventional mix in the area. Ultimately, the long-term performance of this section of pavement will reveal whether the process is cost effective and a viable alternative for adding crumb rubber modifier to hot-mix asphalt. |
