| Description | Asphalt and crumb rubber was first mixed and developed in the 1950s. The mixture was heated to dissolve the crumb rubber to allow easy handling. McDonald found that asphalt and rubber mixes offered the greatest advantages when the physical properties approached rubber. He selected the time, temperature and blends to obtain maximum end results. The physical properties included in the manufacturers of tires were added to the physical properties of asphalt. Tires are made with 30 different kinds of rubber. Each portion of the tire has a different formulation or rubber, both natural and synthetic. The crumb rubber additive to asphalt cement offers major improvements in aging, flexibility, elasticity, softening point, rebound etc. Asphalt-rubber has been used in 45 of the 50 states, Western Europe and South Africa for nearly 30 years. It has been most successful as a surfacing material as a seal on distressed pavements. In recent years it has shown great value advantages in Asphalt-rubber hot mix for life cycle and removal of a waste. |
