Description The advantages of the 3-layer system are in providing a 15-25 year life span for pavements that would normally require reconstruction at 2-3 times the cost. Inconveniences to residents and business, traffic tie-ups, and overall liability exposure associated with reconstruction projects are also avoided. The 3-layer system can provide these advantages by drastically reducing the excessively thick and impractical overlay requirement to extend pavement life. First, the SAMI distributes the concentration of stresses at cracks after they reflect through the leveling course, such that the tendency for cracks to reflect to the overlay is greatly reduced. Secondly, the ARHM overlay reduces deflections about the same as a conventional overlay, but since the overlay is thinner than normal requirements, there remains a relatively large deflection under load. The inherent resilience in the ARHM material can easily accommodate these larger deflections, the final result being the 15-25 year life span with a 1"-2" overlay.
