| Description |
The ecological problems presented by landfills have
included a special focus on the problems of scrap tires. Scrap tires are very
difficult to bury in a landfill and, exposed, present a fire hazard and are a
breeding ground for disease carrying insects and rodents. For this reason, many
are looking toward a more positive method of handling scrap tiresrecycling
them. One way in which scrap tires have been recycled for over twenty years is
through their use in Asphalt-Rubber. Charles McDonald invented asphalt-rubber
in the 1960s as a method of improving asphalt, not as a means of disposing of
tires. Asphalt-Rubber has prospered because of its qualities, not because it
happened to fit into the current recycling tread. This presentation is intended
as an explanation of Asphalt-Rubber and its uses.
