Description One of the main functions of a surfacing layer of a pavement structure is to prevent the ingress of water. Research with the Heavy Vehicle Simulators demonstrated that even light pavement structures can carry large numbers of axles, provided that water is kept out. It is therefore not surprising that modified binders, with superior crack sealing properties, are currently very much in favor in the rehabilitation field. The purpose of this paper is to describe the uses of bitumen-rubber binders in interim rehabilitation measures aimed at prolonging the life of distressed pavement structures.
